Saiga Antelope Research Expedition
The specialized environmental and scientific expedition of the Kazakhstan National Geographic Society was entirely dedicated to monitoring, protecting, and thoroughly studying the population of saiga antelopes—unique ancient mammals, contemporaries of mammoths, which serve as a symbol and pride of the Kazakh steppes but face the threat of extinction.
Field Research in the Steppe
KazGeo scientists, biologists, ecologists, and travelers, alongside experts from specialized institutions, conducted large-scale census operations along traditional migration routes and saiga calving grounds. The expedition operated under harsh conditions in the semi-deserts and steppes of Western and Central Kazakhstan, utilizing satellite trackers, drones, and ground observation methods.
Protection of Rare Species
The results of the field research formed the basis for strategic recommendations to strengthen the protection of animal habitats, combat poaching, and optimize ecological corridors. The project made a significant contribution to biodiversity conservation and drew state attention to the ecological security of steppe ecosystems.
