July 30, 2019 – ‘Across the Great Steppe’ Expedition

On July 30, 2019, the large-scale scientific research expedition of the Kazakhstan National Geographic Society, ‘Across the Great Steppe’, was launched. The project aimed at a comprehensive study of the geographical, landscape, ecological, and socio-economic features of the republic’s steppe regions under modern realities.

Exploring Steppe Ecosystems

The research team crossed thousands of kilometers of the Kazakh steppe in expedition transport. Scientists recorded climate changes, assessed the condition of flora and fauna, studied the water resources of rivers and lakes, and examined the lifestyles and traditions of remote rural settlements living in harmony with nature.

Popularizing Geography

The expedition became a classical example of field geographic work, reviving the traditions of academic discovery. The project vividly demonstrated to society the importance of fundamental science for solving environmental tasks and developing sustainable domestic tourism in Kazakhstan.
