Keruen Motorcycle Expedition: An 18,000-Kilometre Journey to Europe and Back

Keruen expedition in Amsterdam

In 2014, three travellers from Kazakhstan covered more than 18,000 kilometres across 20 countries on the Keruen motorcycle expedition. The journey introduced international audiences to Kazakhstan, its culture and its international initiatives.

About the Project

The Keruen expedition departed from Astana on 21 May 2014. Its participants — Serik Sultan, Askhat Zhakabayev and Diyaz Baiseitov — travelled from Kazakhstan to Europe, returning to the capital in early July. The journey lasted 45 days.

The route took them through Scandinavia, Western and Southern Europe, as well as Türkiye and the Caucasus. Along the way, the riders met local residents and shared stories about Kazakhstan’s culture and traditions.

A key purpose of the expedition was to raise awareness of the forthcoming EXPO 2017 in Astana and the G-Global initiative. The participants aimed to spark young people’s interest in Kazakhstan and encourage them to visit.

Keruen brought together long-distance travel and cultural exchange, giving people across different countries an opportunity to learn about Kazakhstan through personal encounters with its travellers.
